Jerzens – Sunny Alpine Village in the Pitztal Valley

Located on a sunny terrace in the breathtaking Pitztal Valley in Tyrol, Austria, Jerzens is a picturesque alpine village that perfectly balances rustic Tyrolean charm with modern holiday comfort. With around 1,000 inhabitants, it serves as an idyllic retreat for travelers seeking untouched nature, exciting outdoor sports and rich cultural traditions.

History: From medieval farms to modern resort

Jerzens’ roots stretch back to pre-Roman times, when the area was known as “Irtzens”. In the Middle Ages, the village became known for its high-quality cutlery and ironwork. The area developed from Schwaighof farms – self-sufficient medieval alpine farms – which over time grew into the cozy villages we see today.

For centuries, Jerzens was a quiet farming community, but in 1964 everything changed with the construction of the first ski lift on the snow-sure Hochzeiger mountain. This marked the beginning of the village's development into a modern alpine resort.

Description: Alpine atmosphere and relaxing holidays

Jerzens is known for its warm hospitality, fresh mountain air and fantastic views of the surrounding peaks and green alpine meadows. The village combines traditional farmhouses with modern holiday comfort.

Here you will find everything from cozy family-run apartments close to the ski lifts to luxurious Alpine villas with sauna and panoramic views of the valley. Jerzens is the perfect starting point for both relaxation and adventure in the Alps.

Typical dishes: Traditional Tyrolean food

Tyrolean cuisine is rustic, nourishing and perfect after long days in the mountains.

Tiroler Gröstl is a classic dish of fried potatoes, onions and bacon topped with fried eggs. Kasspatzln consists of soft egg noodles tossed in strong melted mountain cheese and crispy onions. Speckknödel are hearty bread dumplings with Tyrolean bacon served in broth or with sauerkraut.

Marend is a traditional snack board with local cheeses, smoked bacon, pickled vegetables and rye bread. For dessert, Kaiserschmarren is a favorite – a fluffy, caramelized pancake served with fruit compote.

Activities: Experiences all year round

Jerzens is a paradise for nature lovers and active holidaymakers regardless of the season.

In winter, the Hochzeiger ski area offers 40 kilometers of snow-sure slopes for both beginners and experienced skiers. There are also opportunities for tobogganing, winter hiking and snowshoeing through quiet forests.

In summer, visitors can enjoy everything from family-friendly hiking trails to demanding mountain climbs. ZirbenCarts provide fast-paced rides down mountain trails, while the XP Adventure Park offers cable cars and climbing challenges in the treetops.

Nature: Spectacular Alpine scenery

Jerzens is closely connected to the surrounding nature and especially the Swiss stone pine, locally known as the Zirbe or “Queen of the Alps”.

Located at an altitude of around 2,000 metres, the ZirbenPark is an interactive nature park with activities for the whole family and impressive views. The Riegetal Nature Reserve protects the area’s unique alpine flora and fauna between the peaks of the Wildgrat and Hoher Gemeindekopf.

Also nearby is the Stuiben Waterfall, where visitors can experience the rushing water up close via safe metal stairs along the cliffside.

Festivals and traditions: Tyrolean culture in living form

Jerzens proudly keeps its old traditions alive through colourful festivals and local events.

The Almabtrieb, the traditional cattle drive in September, is one of the biggest events of the year. Here, cows decorated with flowers and bells are brought down from the mountains, while the village celebrates with music, dance and local specialties.

Kirchtagsfest is a traditional church market with brass bands, locals in Dirndls and Lederhosen and lots of Tyrolean atmosphere. In the summer, there are weekly outdoor concerts, where the local brass band creates a cozy atmosphere in the village center.
